[Here have a face that you might not quite recognize, unless you've seen Hotsuma carrying the owner around like a sack of potatoes recently. Now, however, he's offering a small, politely friendly smile as he waits for his release from the Infirmary.]

It appears that my initial assessment of these gods wasn't entirely accurate - at least, not all of them.

[He sighs then and glances to the side, to make sure Hotsuma was still out of earshot, then turns back to cant his head to the side, thoughtful.]

It seems I owe Athena my thanks, and my apologies. Despite my distrust, she took the time to help me while I was struggling. Sorry if my ah, coma, inconvenienced anyone, especially Hotsuma and my sisters, during the Solstice. Just what have I missed these last few weeks?

There’s a visitor to camp lounging on the steps of Cabin 7 just before breakfast on July 2nd. Maybe eighteen years old, he’s stunning. Wavy blond hair, tanned skin, and a bright smile make him handsome beyond belief as he surveys the campers. He rises when pretty much everyone is out of their cabins, dusting off denim shorts and calls them over. Somehow, even with the backdrop of the glowing cabin in the sunrise, this kid stands out.

“Hey, cousins.” He stuffs his hands in his pockets, projecting a laid back attitude. “So, you know why you’re in camp. You’re training to become heroes, right? Well, since there’s twelve of us and twelve months in the year, we’re gonna be testing you once a month for your skills.”

So that’s what this is. A godly announcement. From Apollo. God of the sun, of music, of poetry, of prophecy. God of archery and healing. Twin brother of Artemis, son of Zeus.

“So on the current calendar, July’s the seventh month. And this,” he jerks his thumb back, “is the seventh cabin. So it makes sense for me to offer you your first challenge.” He gives an over-dramatic sigh. “But you guys seem to have shown off your combat skills pretty well last month--and no one else is gonna say it from upstairs, but you did a good job, for untested new heroes. It’s a good thing that vote went the way it did, huh?” He gives a nod to the remaining members of cabins 1 and 3, and to the Hades children in the crowd. He loves being right.

“You’ve got good bodies, your reactions are fast. You survived this long, that proves it. So I’m going to test your minds.” He glances at cabin 6 across the way. “Not smarts, like somebody might, but your creativity. Sometimes, being creative can save your lives. So at the end of the month, I want each of the cabins to submit to me a poem or a song, and it will be judged. The winner, of course, will get a prize. Along with that prize, they’ll have the privilege of no chores for an entire month.”

That. Is a damn good prize. No shoveling the stables, no picking strawberries in the heat, no cleaning up after sparring.

Apollo grins, and winks at his own kids. “Do me proud.”

He then turns back to the kids gathered. “Any questions?”

Video;

A smallish pale girl appears on the system, moving around somewhat frantically near the various cabins with a look that is 1 part confusion, 1 part anxiety, and 4 parts annoyance and 4 parts whatever that look Mr. Scott had when Captain Kirk told him to rewrite the laws of physics in 15 minutes.

"Um, look. I'm sure whatever is going on is really important here but I was kind of in the middle of something back home. Something involving restoring a destroyed planetary power system before life support on something completely fails and given how I only sort of LOOKED at it for about a minute and most of the best parts are under the sea I really don't have a lot of time for this right now. After I get it up sure, bring me and MY SEIBZEHN here and we'll step on ANYTHING you want but you just brought me and I'm not so useful for squishing things alone."

"I understand you want to make it personal by saying my dad is one of the people here but I do kind of know my family, even if we were separated most of my life. Really, just let me finish my project and just ask, home will probably be unbearably dull once I get the Zohar reactor working again anyways so it'll be a welcome diversion."

Her face turns a bit more irritated at the next part.

"Unless this is some sort of gag Mr. One Eyed Pirate King! I know you're the one who bonked me over the head and drug me out before I could get a better look at that system to get it back online despite the city crashing. Don't think for one minute that if this is some sort of gag and I find you behind it I won't BEAT THE EVER-LOVING SNOT OUT OF YOUR ONE REMAINING GOOD EYE!"

Action;

Later Maria is sitting by the water looking miserable. She's playing with her watch, pushing every damn button on the thing.

"Yeah yeah... No carrier. Seibzehn, I know you have to have power. Please come in. Dad had to have put in his own reactor or something. C'mon, you can't do this to me! You always come. Maybe some sort of jamming I need to figure out how to defeat. Oh who are you kidding Balthasar, the power grid is down and you're some place weird."

She buries her head in her knees and keeps pressing the button getting lower with every non-receptive beep she gets.

[Announcements! Friday morning at breakfast, Chiron rises with a cough to get the attention of the campers.]

It's come to my attention that some of you have expressed interest in a trip to the city. While it is supremely dangerous, it might be for the best that you learn to test your skills in the real world.

The summer solstice is a week from today, and the Olympian Council with it. The gods feel it would be an educational experience for all of you to attend and see why they have been so busy since your appearance, since some of you have also become concerned with their lack of... [He searches for a word] presence in your life. I think, then, that it would be acceptable for the camp to leave early on Thursday morning so you could spend the day in the city.

But this isn't without rules! You must stay in groups of three or four and be on your guard--even the Mist can't cover everything, so you will need to prevent as much damage as you can. You must be back at Olympus by 10PM. You must be armed with a Celestial Bronze blade you can hide on your person, but you must not get into fights with mortals. You can not for any reason use any telephones. You must wear your camp shirt so we can find you easily. [And then he gives a long-suffering sigh.] You must not stand around in the Greek and Roman of the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit pointing to pottery and saying "that is my mother or father." That is expressly forbidden, and I do not want to have to explain you to security.

[Mr. D gives a very un-godly scoff at that. Apparently, he remembers this occasion.]

We'll be returning to camp on the evening of the 23rd directly from Olympus. If there are any questions, I'll be at the archery range, preparing for lessons.

[He leaves you now to make plans amongst yourself.]
